As part of the European Institute's anniversary celebrations in 2021-2022, we held a photography competition with the aim of sharing thoughtful, beautiful and exciting photographic moments.
The theme of our competition was ‘Focus on Europe’. As the hub for European research and teaching at LSE, we want to celebrate images that exemplify what Europe means to our students, staff and alumni: whether these are inspired by their studies, their home and culture, or their experience of living and studying in London.
Explore our four winners' photographs below. You can also visit a full gallery of all competition entrants here!
The winners:
First place: Food delivery during the COVID-19 pandemic - taken by Vitalis Nakrosis
Captured in December 2020 during COVID-19 lockdown in Vilnius, Lithuania. A nation-wide quarantine increased substantially demand for food delivery in the country. The image shows a man from Wolt, the food-delivery platform, delivering food late in the evening during a winter storm.
Second place: Europe, Between Tradition and Modernity - taken by Ilan Mugnier
Almost a thousand years separate these two monuments. The castle was erected in 1078 while the skyscraper was designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano and was inaugurated in 2012. Europe has been known worldwide for its plurisecular history, cultures, and traditions. I thought this photograph well illustrates this heritage.
Third place: Say freeze! 2 - taken by Rosie Hinds
Taken in the ice cave under the glacier Vatnajokull, in Iceland. The air has been squeezed out from the weight of the ice, which is what gives the ice this striking blue colour.
Audience Choice award: The EI during Covid-19 (year 2020-2021) - taken by Carla Russo
