Professor Simona Iammarino discusses the regional dimension of inequality in a university session at the European Week of Regions and Cities in Brussels.
The European Week of Regions and Cities is an annual four-day event during which cities and regions showcase their capacity to create growth and jobs, implement European Union cohesion policy, and prove the importance of the local and regional level for good European governance.
The event has become a European networking platform for experts in regional and local development. Exchange of good practice in economic development and social inclusion, cross-border cooperation, public-private partnerships, regional innovation and community-led local development have become some of its many topics.
This year, Simona Iammarino (Professor of Economic Geography at LSE) will be chair of the university session: The regional dimension of inequality.
This session aims at discussing implications for EU policies coming from recent research on the reactions of regions to different kinds of hazardous events, from short(er)-term shocks (e.g. financial crises, firm relocation) to long(er)-term disruptive trends (e.g. demographic transformations, technological shifts, changes in the global division of labour). The Union is facing new challenges to support the capabilities of regions to successfully compete in uncertain and contested environments, at the same time tackling increasing spatial and individual inequality, recently at the root of disruptive political results. Individual and contextual reactions to risk ultimately determine regional resilience, or the lack of it, while shaping the outcomes in terms of equity/fairness in Europe as elsewhere.
