Duncan Green

Duncan is Professor in Practice at LSE and a leader in the field of influencing for social, humanitarian and development goals. His PhD explored the interaction between active citizens and effective states. 

For 20 years he was a senior strategic adviser to Oxfam GB. He has authored seven books on different aspects of activism, international development and humanitarianism, including the 2nd edition of How Change Happens (2024). The latter is focussed on activism, influencing and advocacy, with case studies from multiple contexts, including fragile democracies and autocracies. It includes a framework commonly used by INGOs to design influencing strategies. 

Duncan regularly writes, podcasts, and consults on aspects of humanitarian and development influencing and practice, and is the Director of the FLIA’s Activism, Influencing and Change Programme.

Tom Kirk

Tom is a Research Fellow at LSE. He has over twelve years of experience living, researching, and consulting in humanitarian and development settings. For his PhD he investigated support provided to Pakistani activists by Britain's development agency. 

Tom has since delivered a range of research projects focussed on civil society in fragile democracies, with a focus on South Asia and East Africa. He has also managed teams to deliver consultancy research projects across multiple development and crisis-affected countries, for clients from across the spectrum of the influencing sector. He has worked with domestic civil society organisations to design influencing strategies. 

Tom has taught a course on activism at the LSE with Professor Green for seven years, and designed and led influencing courses for senior humanitarian and development leaders, business and civil society organisations.
