PFAL Speaker Series:
Public Service and effective policy implementation in Africa: Lessons from Nigeria | In partnership with the Public Service Institute of Nigeria (PSIN)
In our last session, the panel discussed the state of policy and public service leadership in Africa.
Date: Friday 5 May 2023
Time: 4:00pm-6:00pm
Location: Marshall Building (MAR.1.04)
Background
At the national and continental levels, there is no shortage of well-articulated plans for the development of Africa. However, in most cases, the bureaucracy has limited competence, and/or resources to implement these plans.
Considering these limitations, our speakers will focus on how the Nigerian civil service is tackling these challenges and what are the lessons for the rest of Africa. They will critically discuss the following:
- Key challenges and the way forward for public service in Nigeria/Africa.
- Managing politics and governance (transitions, setting development agendas, etc.)
- Policy formulation and implementation processes, feedback mechanisms, and measuring impact.
- Public service reforms (recruitment, remuneration, career progression, technology, etc.)
