Academic Integrity

Integrity and honesty play vital roles in all aspects of our life. Cheating on assessments and plagiarism are two common examples of academic dishonesty and misconduct.

The work you submit is expected to be 100% your own. Therefore, unless instructed otherwise, you must not collaborate or confer with anyone during the assessment. You must ensure all sources (which includes books, articles, on-line resources) used in your work are correctly referenced. The School will carry out checks to ensure the academic integrity of your work. Many students that break the School’s assessment regulations did not intend to cheat but did not properly understand the School’s regulations on referencing and plagiarism.

The School considers all forms of plagiarism, whether deliberate or otherwise, a very serious matter and can apply severe penalties that might impact on your award.

Plagiarism is not just about cheating; it is about accurately and appropriately referencing the work of others. Therefore, before you submit your work, you must check that:

all sources are correctly referenced within the body of your work where appropriate/relevant;

where you have quoted any sources directly, you have used quotation marks; and

you have not re-used work you have previously submitted to the School because this will be considered self-plagiarism.

By submitting your assessment, you confirm that you have read and understood:

the above statement and all department regulations

the School’s Regulations on Assessment Offences: Plagiarism

the School’s Regulations on Assessment Offences: Other Than Plagiarism

and you also confirm you have checked to ensure all information, concepts or words that originate from other sources are correctly and appropriately referenced.

You acknowledge your work will be run through plagiarism detection software Turnitin which may retain a copy on its database.

Finally, you confirm that your work is 100% your own and you have not collaborated or conferred with anyone during the assessment; this includes help with editing or proof reading.

The School’s rules regarding academic discipline can be found here.

Assessment FAQs

The following FAQs answer questions about the assessment period, including information about sitting online assessments, technical difficulties etc.

 Question                                                      Answer

What should I do if I have some technical difficulties?

If your assessment is online, please ensure that your devices are in full working order and that you save your work at regular intervals. We also recommend that you save your work/files to a cloud-based storage regularly during the exam period.

In case of technical issues, you should contact accounting@lse.ac.uk with the subject heading: ACXXX Take-home exam inquiry (add course code).

In the case of an unexpected interruption of service to Moodle disabling you to submit your completed files, you should email your answer file to accounting@lse.ac.uk by the deadline.

What should I do if I am unfit to sit the exam and want to defer it?

Please go to the School’s extensions, deferrals and exceptional circumstances website here to submit a deferral request.

Please note: You can only apply for deferral or withdraw your previous deferral (if you change your mind) of the exam before the exam paper is first released.

Please read the Student Guidance on the School’s Extension, Deferral and Exceptional Circumstances Policies for any assessments.

What should I do if I have some exceptional circumstances while attempting the exam or missed the exam without an approved deferral?

Please go to the School’s extensions, deferrals and exceptional circumstances website here to notify the exam board of any exceptional circumstances.

Please read the Student Guidance on the School’s Extension, Deferral and Exceptional Circumstances Policies for any assessments for more information.

If I have Individual Exam Adjustments (IEA) and an Inclusion Plan (IP) approved by the School, will I get extra time overall?

What if I have a Letter of Notification (LoN)?

Please read the Student Guidance on the School’s policy for Students with IEAs and IPs for the Summer Term and IRDAP Assessments. Please check here for more general information on IEAs.

If you have a ‘Letter of Notification’ as part of your IEAs or IP, you will need to attach this to all submissions on Moodle yourself. If you do not have a digital copy of the appropriate Letter of Notification, please contact Disability and Well Being Services (disability-dyslexia@lse.ac.uk).
