LSE Old Building. Nigel Stead
Following the Executive Order signed by President Trump, suspending entry to the USA for people from Libya, Iran, Iraq, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen, LSE’s Interim Director Professor Julia Black has commented:
“We are very concerned by the recent restrictions imposed by the US government on the travel of citizens of seven countries. LSE was founded for the betterment of society and, as one of the UK’s most globally focused universities, we continue to be enriched by our community of students and academics from across the world. We remain – as ever – passionately committed to the international outlook and connectivity that make LSE what it is. It is vital to our success and something of which we are all rightly proud.
The ethos of the School, based on diversity and inclusivity, is set firmly in opposition to any policies that discriminate against and restrict the free movement of people, of ideas and of intellect. In these divisive and uncertain times, we will continue to uphold our values, to support our uniquely diverse global community and to promote both equality of opportunity, and freedom of belief and expression. We are not yet certain how many of our staff and students may be affected, but we are working closely with Universities UK, the Russell Group and with Government to monitor the situation and will seek to ensure that our community can remain internationally mobile, open and diverse.”
