Dr

Piketty and others have shown that there has been a significant increase in levels of inequality in many countries since the 1970s. This presentation explores the global political economy of inequality and in particular considers the relationship between inequality and democracy. Revisiting historical studies of the relationship between democracy and inequality in the nineteenth and early twentieth century Europe, the presentation considers how contemporary processes of de-democratisation may be playing a role in the recent upturn in inequality trends.

Dr. Dena Freman is a Senior Visiting Fellow in the Department of Anthropology, LSE and an Associate of the International Inequalities Institutute.
