In this Research Seminar, the speaker will present the findings of the Research Project 'Cyprus and the EU Sanctions on Russia: emancipation or entrapment? Elites and Public Opinion Perceptions & The Way Forward ', funded by the A.G. Leventis Research Innovation Programme on Cyprus.
The seminar uncovers the intricate geopolitical challenges the Republic of Cyprus (RoC) faces in the wake of EU sanctions on Russia. We'll explore how these sanctions have reshaped RoC’s foreign policy and stirred the island’s domestic politics. Did Cyprus find itself entrapped within the EU "shelter," or did it use this moment to pivot more decisively towards the West? We'll dive into the deep-rooted ties between Cyprus and Russia, and the island’s recent strategic shift towards the US and EU, all against the backdrop of the political shock triggered by the Ukraine conflict. The discussion will also touch on the ripple effects of these foreign policy shifts at home, offering insights into the emerging challenges within Cyprus’s political landscape.
