The seminar will present the findings of two new Hellenic Observatory research projects that identify what kind of cultural issue cleavages are evident in Greece today and their grounding in popular support.
The first explores new partisan identities - timely as Greece approaches new parliamentary elections. The second investigates four case studies of ‘culture war’ conflicts based around national identity; migrants and refugees; gender; and the response to COVID-19 restrictions. The discussion will create a picture of the nature and impact of ‘culture wars’ in Greece today. Dr Roula Nezi will speak on ‘Cultural Divides and Affective Polarisation’ and Professors Sokratis Koniordos and Dimitri A. Sotiropoulos will speak on ‘The Paradoxes and Mixed Record of Culture Wars in Contemporary Greece’.
