Women in economics have to overcome gender biases, lack of mentors and support networks, higher standards for recognition, and hostile work environments among other obstacles. In developing countries, these barriers are exacerbated by limited access to education and career opportunities, unencouraging attitudes, and pressures to provide support at home. They limit the potential of women economists and their ability to contribute to the growth and development of their countries. By missing the perspective and insight of women economists, research and policy too remain insufficient to push inclusive growth.
To mark International Women’s Day, IGC convenes four women economists to share their journey, challenges and opportunities for aspiring economists who will be shaping the economic discipline of tomorrow. The panellists explore measures to address these barriers and promote greater inclusivity and diversity in economics.
