In this event, Yasheng Huang, the Epoch Foundation Professor of International Management at MIT, will discuss how autocracy and ideological homogeneity have hampered Chinese technological development in the past, and threaten to do so again.

Drawing on new data, he will explore the policy implications of this historical pattern for China at a time of mounting strategic and economic rivalry with the United States.

Meet our speaker and chair

Yasheng Huang (@YashengHuang) is Epoch Foundation professor of global economics and management at MIT’s Sloan School of Management. From 2013 to 2017, he served as an associate dean in charge of MIT Sloan’s global partnership programs and its action learning initiatives. His previous appointments include faculty positions at the University of Michigan and at Harvard Business School.

Peter Trubowitz (@ptrubowitz) is Professor of International Relations and Director of the Phelan US Centre at the London School of Economics and Political Science and Associate Fellow at Chatham House.
