Join us for this event at which LSE Visiting Senior Fellow Valeria Gontareva who is a former Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine will discuss Ukraine's wartime economy and the financial challenges it faces.   

Her remarks will also including observations on the Ukrainian banking sector, financial needs, global implications and worldwide economic shocks.

Meet our speaker and chair

Valeria Gontareva served as the Governor of the National Bank of Ukraine in 2014-2017. She was the first woman to lead Ukraine’s central bank and oversaw vital reforms to implement a new monetary policy of inflation targeting and flexible exchange rate regime, to clean up Ukraine’s banking sector, strengthen regulatory supervision, and ensure the independence of the National Bank. She has a plethora of experience working in private sector financial institutions including Société Générale, ING Bank and Investment Capital Ukraine (ICU), a top Ukrainian financial services group. Currently, she is a Visiting Senior Fellow at the School of Public Policy at LSE. 

Minouche Shafik is Director of the London School of Economics and Political Science. Prior to this, she was Deputy Governor of the Bank of England. She is an alumna of LSE. Her new book, What We Owe Each Other: A New Social Contract, is out now. She is co-chair of the Economy 2030 Inquiry commission.
