Other than humans, which animal species are conscious? When did consciousness first evolve, and what is its function? What brain structures are required for consciousness? Recent developments in the neuroscience and evolutionary biology of consciousness promise to shed new light on these tantalising puzzles. In this panel discussion, the speakers will consider what we know, what we don’t know, and what we may never know about the origins of consciousness.

Björn Brembs is Professor of Neurogenetics, University of Regensburg.

Chris Frith (@cdfrith) is Professor Emeritus, Wellcome Trust Centre for Neuroimaging, UCL and Visiting Professor, Interacting Minds Centre, Aarhus University.

Eva Jablonka is Professor, Cohn Institute for the History of Philosophy of Science and Ideas, Tel Aviv University.

Jonathan Birch is Assistant Professor, Department of Philosophy, Logic and Scientific Method (LSE) and Forum for European Philosophy Fellow.
