This lecture and new book Towards the Flame: Empire, War and the End of Tsarist Russia is a study of the international crisis of 1900-19 from a largely Russian angle. It is based on significant research in Russian archives. Professor Dominic Lieven provides a radically different interpretation of the crisis to the one that dominates anglophone historiography.
Dominic Lieven is Senior Research Fellow at Trinity College, Cambridge, and a Fellow of the British Academy.
Janet Hartley is Professor of International History and Head of the Department of International History at LSE.
The Department of International History (@lsehistory) is one of the top five university history departments in the UK.
