In her forthcoming book, Leigh Gardner presents the first quantitative estimates of Liberia's economic performance from its establishment as a free state in 1822 onwards, allowing comparisons with both its colonized neighbors and other countries, and offering a new perspective on the role of power and power relationships in the shaping of Africa's economic history.
