These are demanding times for Europe’s urban governments. Cities face a daunting array of interlinked challenges – including rapidly rising energy costs, aging populations, migration pressures, and the urgent need to cut greenhouse gases and adapt to climate change – that are all placing increasing demands on very limited budgets.
Europe’s cities have long shown an ability to innovate their way out of problems and to develop creative new solutions that improve the experience of urban life. But it is also clear that our cities will need to build on this capacity for inventiveness and bold experimentation if they are to meet the many challenges ahead.
LSE Cities is delighted to be supporting Eurocities in their essential advocacy work on behalf of Europe’s largest cities and to collaborate on an essential research agenda that will provide vital insights about the support city governments need on their innovation journeys.
Against this background, we have just launched a new Eurocities/LSE Cities survey of government innovation capacity in Europe’s cities, aimed at city officials leading innovation work in their administrations. If that is you or someone you know, please complete/share the survey.
Look out for the results from this survey and our wider resarch outputs on government innovation next year.
