Philosophy International (PI) publishes the DVD Library of Philosophy. The award-winning archives were created for philosophers by philosophers and document the work of Donald Davidson, W V Quine and Sir Peter Strawson. In the course of exploring the work, we are treated to the penetrating philosophical analysis of some of the finest and most influential contemporary philosophers in their roles as discussants.

Background
The first video featured the work of Sir Peter Strawson, with discussants Martin Davies and Mark Sainsbury. Its enthusiastic reception at the Joint Session of Mind and the Aristotelian Society in 1993 helped to generate the impetus to take the project further. Next, the late W. V. Quine agreed to be the subject of a comprehensive series, and a seven programme series on his work was launched on the official programme at the APA meeting in Boston in 1995. A thorough review of the series was written for Mind by the Quine specialist, Roger Gibson, and his enthusiastic endorsement of the series provided further momentum to the venture. A comprehensive archive on the work of Donald Davidson, recorded in London and Berkeley, was completed in September 1997.
Current objectives
To provide unique archival documentaries
The aim of the video series is to capture a clear, up-to-date account of the subject's position, to record their response to the major criticisms of that position and to hear and see the subject present their views. A session between subject and interlocutor(s) will typically provoke thoughtful discussion and debate. Occasionally, a new view will emerge. The role of the discussants must also be emphasized; in shedding light on the subject's work we are simultaneously treated to an illumination of the thought and ideas of other influential contemporary philosophers.
To supply resources for teaching and research
Much of philosophy develops through the publication of finely-honed theses in the major journals. In time, thoughtful criticism and response to the theses emerge, and so the dialectic proceeds. The video archives do not attempt to compete with this process, but to supplement it in ways unique to the medium. Clearly a subject's immediate response to questions posed will sometimes fail to carry the authority of more carefully crafted written work. However, to see and hear the subject engage in philosophical argument and defend, explain and clarify his/her position is a privilege that can be made available to philosophers, anywhere in the world, now and for many years to come.
Outreach and dissemination
PI is also committed to projects that will help to bring philosophy to a wider community. A comprehensive video-based multimedia introduction to philosophy is planned which aims to engage an intelligent non-specialist audience in the problems and concerns, as well as the skills and techniques of the subject.
PI will expand activities in two main areas:
Archival Video Series
Production of comprehensive video series on the work of the following has been agreed: Noam Chomsky, Daniel Dennett, Sir Michael Dummett, Ronald Dworkin, Hilary Putnam, John Searle, and the Nobel Laureates, Kenneth Arrow and Amartya Sen.
Introduction to Philosophy
Initial planning has started on the pre-production of a multimedia entry-level introduction to philosophy based on a video/TV series. The project aims to present in a non-technical manner a comprehensive introduction the subject. The intended audience level is first-year college student/interested layman – similar to the audience profile of public broadcast services worldwide. Each program in the series will last approximately one-hour and will exploit computer graphics, diagrams and illustrations as well as enlisting major philosophers. The primary emphasis will be on clear, jargon-free communication. An advisory group of philosophers has been assembled to determine the content and level of the series.
Where the video series are located and how accessible they are will play a major role in how they are used. Feedback from many users of our series indicates that budget-size is the factor that most determines where the series will be located.
Philosophy departments with considerable budgets and video equipment may locate the videos in the department where they can be used for classroom, seminar or small group presentations, or for individual borrowing or viewing on site. In other institutions, the library is the usual location and lecturers may book the videos for class use, while students may view them in the library or borrow them for personal study. Note each series is accompanied by a comprehensive Series Guide (the Strawson Program has a complete transcript), which can be photocopied for student handouts. The guide is also useful fo rplanning in advance the sections of the video to be viewed.
Classroom/Seminar Presentations
How the material is integrated for use in the class will depend upon syllabus and particular course requirements. The suitability of any programme, or programme section, can best be determined by the lecturer by first reading the content of the programme from the guide and then previewing the pertinent areas of the videos. In more advanced courses, where time permits, sections may be viewed and then discussed either immediately afterwards or in a following class. Students may also view the material in their own time, singly or in small groups where facilities permit, and the discussion can then follow under the instructor’s supervision.
Seminars with prominent guest discussants featuring selections from the video series are conspicuous events on the calendar of the Centre for Philosophy of Natural and Social Science. Please contact us if you would like to receive invitations and information about these seminars.
Review, Reference and Research
Wherever it is decided to locate the series, these will provide a source of rich and salient discussion and argument on the major areas of philosophy. The way in which philosophical themes interconnect is demonstrated to particular advantage in the setting of face-to-face discussion. And most importantly, for the individual enterprises of review, reference and research, the student may proceed at her own pace.
PI is indebted to the philosophy community worldwide for supporting our series. As a gesture of thanks to our series purchasers we will provide them with special discounts on all our productions. To this end we have formed the PI Club.
Any institution (or individual) that purchases one of our series will be added automatically to our membership list. PI membership is free and members are under no obligation to make further purchases, and no dues, subscriptions or fees are payable. Members will be entitled to special discounts on all future series' purchases.
To claim PI Club discounts, purchasers should check below to insure that their institution is listed, and state "PI Club Member" on any correspondence or purchase orders. The PI Club Members list will be updated as frequently as possible. The most up-to-date list of members and details of the current PI Club discounts are available via email.
