Nations Torn Asunder: the Challenge of Civil War
(Oxford University Press, February 2016)

What makes the contemporary challenge civil war poses so different to that of past periods? What - if anything - is different about the experience of civil war at the dawn of the twenty-first century? 'Nations Torn Asunder' focuses on the explosion of civil wars since 1945 and the huge devastation they have caused, and asks what we can learn from the historical literature on civil wars - going back to the ancient Greeks - to help explain the violence in many parts of the world in the last half century.
