LSE statement on 2017 NSS results

Commenting on the results of the 2017 National Student Survey (NSS), LSE Interim Director Professor Julia Black said:

“Rigorous academic standards and independent critical analysis will continue to be an essential part of undergraduate education at LSE. However, it is clear that work is needed in order to improve our students' overall experience.

“This process is ongoing, but we believe the £11m investment in delivering our education strategy, along with the School’s £350m campus redevelopment project, will lead to substantial benefits for our students.

“The School has already made a number of significant changes in the past year, including the opening of the new academic and personal development centre, LSE Life. We have also agreed to implement further changes to our assessment system and will be introducing in-year exam re-sits. All new developments have been made though working closely with students and in direct response to concerns they have raised.

“Student feedback is vital for the School to better understand where to focus our improvements. That’s why we actively encouraged our students to take part in the NSS, and were very pleased to see a higher than average turnout [1], despite a forceful boycott campaign from our Students’ Union.

“LSE will continue to strongly welcome all student feedback, and remains committed to improving our students' experience."

Behind the article

[1] Despite a campaign by the LSE Students’ Union to boycott the NSS, 61.67% of eligible students completed the 2017 survey. This is above the final average response rate of 58.3% for universities with the same start week as LSE, according to data from HEFCE.  Following a wider student boycott campaign across the country, a number of HE institutions had student participation rates too low this year to generate publishable NSS scores.
